Veterans Day

I have always wondered why US citizens give such importance to their army members or former members, and today was the perfect chance to calrify many of my doubts regarding the subject.

During the last week I saw at many public spots references to the Veterans Day, special offers, special events, so I decided to make a little research abotu the subject and this is what I found out.

The Veterans Day is a day in which US people honor those who have served their country army, and it is celebrated on November 11th due to the statement of president Woodrow Wilson who declared Armisitice Day on November 11th 1919 after signing the treaty with Germany that put an end to World War I. Since then, there were many political circumstances that derived in the remembrance of the people who gave their lives in serving the US army.

This brought up my attention because in Mexico (where I come from) we don't have this kind of celebration, but now that I know a bit of history, it may be due to the fact that Mexico's army haven't really taken part in a major military battle, so we don't really care too much about our army or military forces.

To be honest, I couldn't really make it to any of the remembrance events that were planned for today, but as I said before, people in general could be seen taking part in the national celebration, and being here and knowing a bit about this day's history, makes me feel more engaged to the American culture which at the moment I'm experiencing.
